Three churches, three symbols of God's love in our Community,
working closely together, retaining their individual identity,
with each church a source of encouragement to the others.

Your word is a lantern to my feet
and a light upon my path.

Nones at Caldicot

On Sunday April 29th St. Mary’s Church, Caldicot was invited by Merton Priory to say Nones at 3p.m. along with more than 90 churches, abbeys and cathedrals. This was not a random choice but was because the canons of Llantony Secunda built the first Augustinian Manor House in Wales, at Caldicott in the 12th Century.  They later built a settlement and the church we know as St. Mary’s.

This was the fifteenth Nones held in memory of the canons of Merton.  Merton Priory was an Augustinian foundation, who has had amongst their number St. Thomas a Becket, who proudly wore their habit whilst he was Archbishop and Nicholas Breakespeare, who became the only English Pope.  Holyrood Abbey was built on the same plan as Merton and the Priory became responsible for 60 churches and more than 10 other priories.

Walter de Merton named a college in Oxford where they used his Rule as did Cambridge University.  The laws of this country were formulated at Merton Priory into the Eleven Statutes of Merton.
The Augustinians took their ideology from St Augustine of Hippo, a Father of the church and his understanding of GRACE, reflected St Paul's.  "By grace are you saved, ... it is the gift of God".  This understanding of God’s grace was the motivation behind all the canons’ work.
Therefore the understanding of GRACE became the foundation of our laws, our collegiate system and all the benefits that we have enjoyed for centuries.

So in spite of the high winds and heavy rain 15 worshippers turned out to say Nones – the service of the 9th hour after dawn – the hour our Lord died for us on the Cross.  We were greeted by a quarter peal from our bell ringers who wanted to be part of this historic service.

Worldwide prayer for healing.

Our Church web site has many visitors from all over the world. We would like our visitors to join us in praying for those in need and if they need prayers to let us know so that we can come before the Lord with united prayer world wide. In January alone we have been visited by 16 countries, throughout the world, Let us join together to pray for God's people.

Please pray for:

Beryl,

Dorothy

Your Prayers are also needed about a project in Caldicot. Churches Together at Caldicot believe God has called us to open a coffee shop/advice centre in the town, to be a place where people can go and a place to offer advice and be signpost to other agencies.  Such a place is much needed in our town.  Please could all our friends worldwide pray about this.  Thank you.
