Fantastic News!

At the end of the summer term Rhys Bebb came to visit, to carry out a review of our Green Flag.  We are very pleased to announce that we have retained our Green Flag for the next two years.

We are pleased to welcome Ben Tyrrell, Zak Taylor and Lucy English from Year 3, who are our new Eco Warriors for this year.

“I wanted to be an Eco Warrior because I do lots of recycling at home and wanted to help at school.”  Ben

“I want to save energy and help the environment.’ Lucy

“I really wanted to be an Eco Warrior because I have lots of great ideas and want to share them.”  Zak

Around the World Day

Summer 2011

We organised a whole school event last term.  Everyone was given the chance to dress up in costumes from different countries.  There were a variety of activities taking place around the school e.g. making flags, multicultural music, art from around the world, learning to say hello in lots of different languages and cooking from other countries.

Hello        Hola        Bore da

Nei Ho         Guten Tag

Recycling

We are very keen on recycling at ARW.  We already recycle milk bottles, waste food, paper, card, batteries, mobile phones and jewellery.  We were very concerned about the number of wasted carrier bags being given out by local shops.  We decided to write to the Spar in the village to suggest to them that they should not give away bags.  The owners of the shops stopped giving them away even before the Welsh Government made it law.  Every shop in Wales now charges a minimum of 5p per bag.  We think this is an excellent decision.

Sponsored Litter Pick

The School Council organised a litter pick to raise money for the Meningitis Trust.  The whole school took part and tidied up the school grounds and the surrounding area.

Future Actions

We would like to reinstate Fruit days, this will be the next topic that we will be working on.  We will be writing to Barratts to ask if they would be willing to donate a flag pole to us, so we can display our new Green Flag in the school grounds.

We will also be re-appointing Energy Police in each class, who will be responsible for turning off taps and lights when they are not being used, to help the school save energy.

Archbishop Rowan Williams School visit to Lambeth Palace

July 2011

Recently pupils from Year 6 of Archbishop Rowan Williams School, went by coach to London. The Headteacher Mr. Murphy and Fr. Lyndon arranged the trip.  Members of the staff, school governors, and Fr. Jim, Pastor Kelvin of the Pentecostal Church, and Marian Edwards of the Methodist Church escorted the children. We had been invited to Lambeth Palace, the home of the Archbishop of Canterbury, for a private guided tour of the palace and to enjoy a picnic in the palace gardens. To our great surprise during our tour we were joined by the Archbishop himself. We were all thrilled to meet our old friend Dr. Rowan Williams. After enjoying our picnic in the London sun, it was time for a boat ride down the river Thames, for a lovely afternoon of sightseeing. Then we joined our coach at the Houses of Parliment for our long journey back to Wales. A fantastic day out for one and all.

10th Anniversary of Archbishop Rowan Williams Church School, Portskewett

The Archbishop of Canterbury, Archbishop Rowan Williams, visited his school in Portskewett on Monday, 28th March, 2011 to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the school being built.  The day began with a celebration event in front of the school, dignitaries, local clergy and Governors.  Each class shared music, song, poetry along with prayers for the local community and people living throughout the world - mostly in Welsh.

Throughout the celebration renowned harpist, John Thomas, played incidental Celtic music which delighted the large audience.  The Archbishop gave an address in which he discussed his childhood and the importance of loyalty.  He encouraged the students to be loyal to the school.

The Archbishop was then presented with gifts by the children.  The gifts included an aerial photograph of the school, a ommemorative mug of his visit and a colour ful anthology of the poems and prayers written by the students.

The Archbishop presented the school with a Japanese Rowan Tree which he planted to mark his visit and also to remember those who are suffering from the natural disasters in Japan.  He later visited each class and joined in the lessons both in and out of school.  Members of the School Council were responsible for helping the Archbishop to explore the willow village, which has recently been constructed, together with the improved outdoor learning area and the wild bird meadow.  He was accompanied by Dr. Canon Denison, the director of education for education Monmouthshire;  Councillor Fox; Andrew Keep, AM for Monmouth, Nick Ramsey and the Bishop of Monmouth, Dominic Walker.

The Archbishop Rowan Williams Church School, Portskewett

Church-in-Wales Primary Schools

We have a Church-in-Wales school in our Benefice. It is called 'The Archbishop Rowan Williams Church-in-Wales School' and is situated in Portskewett. It has it's own website which can be found at: http://www.arwprimary.co.uk/
We are very proud to reproduce an article from the 'Monmouth Diocesan Newsletter', Advent/Christmas issue 2006: ARCHBISHOP ROWAN WILLIAMS CHURCH-in-WALES SCHOOL

"The pupils are not only developing their spiritual and academic skills but also learning about how to develop their environment, to make sure it is the best it can be. Pupils who attend the school have planted every single plant in the school grounds i.e. several thousand shrubs. Their efforts have been rewarded this year by winning the Best Kept Village Competition School Award, (in the category for 150 pupils and over). In the Gardening Club held during lunch times, pupils work together to plant, weed and design new features for the school grounds. In 2006 a new historical garden has been developed, with assistance from Staff from ASDA. Vegetables grown are donated to worthy causes. All 200 children at the school take home vegetable plants that they grow on and share with their families".
