CALDICOT WAR MEMORIALS
DEDICATED 11th NOVEMBER 1923

Dedicated as a War Memorial to the fallen of the 1914 - 1918 war, it was designed by Tower. It depicts the three Archangels GABRIEL, (holding the scroll and a lily), MICHAEL, (whose lance has pierced a dragon at his feet and is surmounted by a cross symbolising Christ's triumph over evil), and RAPHAEL, (holding a pilgrims staff and fish). In the tracery lights are four angels holding scrolls inscribed "BENEDICITE ANGELI DOMINI DOMINO" (Angels of the Lord, bless the Lord), and in the topmost tracery is the sacred monogram IHS. Below this window is the War Memorial dedicated to those who lost thier lives in the Second Worl War.
CONSECRATED 5th NOVEMBER 1950

On November 5th, 1950, Bishop Edwin Morris visited the parish to consecrate a War Memorial to the fallen of the Second World War, and a reredos-plaque bearing the names of the fallen of both wars. Villagers of Caldicot were congratulated by the Bishop of Monmouth on their keen interest in the church when the Bishop dedicated a new altar as a memorial to the fallen of the Second World War. Paying a tribute to the parishioners, he said it was very commendable that they had chosen to improve their church rather than have an outside war memorial erected.
Referring to those who died in their country's service he said their death was in some way comparable to the death of Christ. They had purchased freedom for others. Of the four hundred houses in the parish, persons living in all but half-a-dozen contributed towards the cost." The Memorial Altar, in Portland stone, cost £113, and the reredos, in light English oak with a central crucifix on a square of inlaid marble, bears the words "AD MAJOREM DEI GLORIAM ET IN MEMORIAM", and "REQUIEM AETERNAM DONA EIS DOMINE".
