The Restoration of St Mary's Church Portskewett

The appeal to restore the church began in 1999. The Rector, Canon Terry Palmer, the Revd Nansi Davies and the Churchwardens met the Architects with the hope that they may be able to advise on approaching the Heritage Lottery Fund and CADW for financial help. Many fund raising events were held and many letters written; then in June 2001 the longed-for news was received that St Mary's Church, Portskewett, would be restored. The Heritage Lottery Fund and CADW had awarded the funding.

Restoration work began in July 2002 and took eight months to complete. All the services took place in the church hall.

New timbers were placed in the roof, new lath and plaster ceilings replaced the tongue and groove ceilings - again returning them to their original state. The ceilings in the nave and chancel were taken down.

The outside was lime rendered and lime washed, which is how it would have looked when it was built.

The church building continues to be improved. Central heating and a loop system have been installed. Now it is the turn of the organ, which is 105 years old and is being restored.
