Portskewett Church Hall

Re-opened after refurbishment

Early 2009 saw the beginning of the much-anticipated refurbishment to the Church Hall in Portskewett.  Everyone concerned were delighted that the contract was awarded to Hubert Williams - Portskewett Builders and every early indication was that he was definitely the right man for the job.  Work progressed well and the agreed finish date of 20th July was achieved and in fact the hall was opened on 16th July!  It had been an incredible amount of work to raise the grants and pledges for the works to take place, and everyone on the Hall Management Committee is to be complimented on their commitment to the project.  The bulk of the money has come from WAG via MCC and the Axis 3 scheme.  We were also successful in our bid to Monmouthshire County Council under the S106 'New Build' scheme, and the balance had come from a determined fund raising programme by the committee which had been wonderfully supported by our church members, local groups and individuals.  Also, grants came from various other bodies including MCC's 'Older Persons Strategy', The Welsh Church Fund, Oldbury Power Station and the James Pantefedwen Foundation.  The Church Hall had its grand opening on 16th July 2009, and an Open Day on 17th July where all the community were invited.  The project was a team achievement, with everyone pulling together to undertake the immense amount of work required and surpassing their goals.  All the support allowed the project to come together with a result that the community can be proud of.  Local resident Mrs Irene Fuller and Dr. Webb, who was the local GP for 35 years, performed the opening ceremonies where around 90 invited guests, including many sponsors and the Bishop of Monmouth, Dominic, gathered together to admire the newly refurbished church hall.
