Remembrance Sunday – 14th November 2010.
St. Mary’s Portskewett.

A special Eucharist service was held in the morning where the congregation laid poppy petals on the altar to remember those from Portskewett and Sudbrook who have made the ultimate sacrifice. The church had been beautifully decorated with fantastic flower displays by Eileen Chesworth. The sermon was about those who died giving an insight into who they were in order to make sure that the fallen do not just become names on a monument.

“Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends”. (John 15:13).

In the afternoon a Civil Service was held, led by Father Dennis, and the Brownies paraded their banner and led the Intercessions. The sermon was preached by Pastor Jim. After the service the congregation went to the Monument in the churchyard. It had been unveiled 90 years ago on the 13th November. The names of the fallen were read; wreaths placed on the memorial and a two minute silence followed: the beginning and end signalled by the last post and reveille.

‘Perky & Martin ‘
At last the fine weather has been upon us and the first cut of the year has been completed. We were sorry to say goodbye to Maureen and Chris Morgan who have recently moved our of the area and would like to thank them for all the hard work that they have put in over the past years. We wish them we wish them every happiness in their new home (and garden!). Thanks to Moira, Paul and Dominic Cudmore for their help with the first cut. However, any volunteers will be most welcome in order to bring our numbers back to strength, (full training given and a certificate of competence issued!). One question remains. How do we stop the rabbits from eating all the chrysanthemums? (answers to info@caldicot-benefice.org.uk)
Best wishes from ‘Perky’ and his team.

Palm Sunday

Our Palm Sunday procession and service took place on a lovely springtime day. Our friend Diggy the donkey, was fit and well enough again to lead our procession from the Vicarage to the church. She also stayed stayed long enough to ensure that we raised the church rafters with the first hymn before making her way to assist our sister church in the Benefice, St Mary's Caldicot, with thier procession and singing.
