St Mary’s Church, Rogiet is a charming and unpretentious little country church dating, so far as we can tell, mainly from the thirteenth century, but with alterations made in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. We know that the church is mentioned as being in the deanery of Lower Gwent in the time of Henry, Bishop of Llandaff, 1193-1218, so this puts it very early in the thirteenth century and probably in the twelfth.
Ours is a very ancient and very friendly church which has served the community of Rogiet since at least the thirteenth century. As with most churches today (and particularly in the present economic climate) our income is not sufficient to meet our outgoings. We are presently in the process of having plans drawn up to replace our outer vestry, which was originally built as a temporary measure some sixty or so years ago, and is now in dire need of replacement! The financial struggle to keep our church open and available, hopefully for a few more centuries is a concern to our church members.
Many folk think that ‘the Church’ has plenty of money but I’m afraid that it is not the case these days!! St Mary’s in Rogiet is struggling to pay its quota and will be out of money in about 18 months time – which could possibly see the church close. This would be very sad for the village and also the church.
Many of you reading this will have some connection with the church, whether it be through attending a baptism, wedding, funeral, as an occasional worshipper or just a local resident. We would like to invite you to become a ‘Friend of St Mary’s Church, Rogiet’. In order to join you only have to have an interest in the church and / or be willing to make a regular donation to help to keep our village church alive! You do not have to be a regular attender. Any amount – even £1.00 per week would help.
Regular and sustained giving, by the congregation and ‘friends’ is the only way to enable the village church to survive. However, the Church Committee are also planning a series of fundraising events and volunteers are always needed to help at the planning and putting on of these events. If you can spare some time your help would be greatly appreciated. You are also welcome to attend any or all of these events – they are not confined to church members!!!
We have regular church open days – usually on the 3rd Saturday of each month – between 2 and 4pm, where we serve tea / coffee and cakes. Please come along and meet us, have a look at our beautiful village church and, if you are interested, please ask about how you can support us.
Our next Church Open Day is on Saturday 21st May 2011, 2-4pm – we hope to see you there!
We look forward to meeting you and thank you for your interest in our village church.
